Keeping Kitty Cool

Summer is just around the corner! Many of us enjoy cooling off on those sweltering summer days by taking a dip in the pool or enjoying a bit of ice cream. For kitties, cooling off is a bit more difficult. After all, Fluffy is wearing a fur coat! Cats also don’t have many options for cooling off if they overheat. They can’t sweat, except through their paw pads. And while they can pant, it isn’t as effective for them as it is for dogs. Read on as a local Greensboro, NC vet offers tips on helping your feline buddy beat the heat.

Keep Kitty Indoors

Fluffy may really love outdoor activities like chasing butterflies and making paw print art on your windshield, but she will be both safer and cooler indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. Keep your feline buddy comfy and purring inside.

Hammock Beds

Fluffy will nap quite a bit in warm weather. (Cats also need extra naps when the weather is cold, wet, partly cloudy, windy, cool, or sunny, but that’s another topic.) Consider getting your kitty a hammock bed. This will help keep your feline pal cool, as the air will flow beneath her. You can make your own by attaching a piece of material to the legs of a coffee table or end table. Just be sure to cut the material so that it’s smaller than the tabletop.

Brushing Fluffy regularly will help remove dead fur and dander from her coat, which will also help her stay cooler. Add treats and compliments to activate the purr.

Ice Cube Hockey

Fluffy’s cute little paw pads are not only super cute: they also help her regulate her temperature. Batting an ice cube around is actually a fun way for your cat to cool off!

Make sure Fluffy always has cool water available. Many cats prefer drinking running water, so consider getting your furball a kitty fountain.

Let Fluffy Seek Comfort

As you may noticed, our feline pals are quite good at making themselves comfortable. In fact, it’s one of Fluffy’s top skills, along with stealing chairs, power napping, and looking superior. If give your kitty free reign of your home, she’ll naturally gravitate to the coolest spots.
