Pool Safety for Dogs

Does your dog like swimming? Or does your canine buddy get uneasy around the water? Whether your pooch loves the water or is scared of it, you’ll want to take some precautions to keep your furry pal safe at the pool this summer. In this article, a Greensboro, NC vet discusses pool safety for dogs.

Basic Safety

Many of the rules for keeping Fido safe around the pool are the same as those for young children. Block the pool area off with a fence or gate when it’s not in use. Pool covers are also a concern: dogs sometimes mistake the cover for a solid surface, and jump onto them. This can be very dangerous!

Pool Stairs

Making sure your dog knows where the stairs are is very important! If Fido falls into the pool by mistake, he could get into serious trouble if he doesn’t know how to get out again. Take some time to teach your canine companion where the stairs are. It also isn’t a bad idea to mark the exit with something your pup can use as a landmark, like a potted tree.

Paw Care

Fido’s paw pads are very delicate, especially when they are wet. Dogs can get painful paw blisters from running around on cement or tar after going swimming. Keep your pet on soft ground when he gets out of the water, and use paw balm to protect those furry feet.

Water

Try not to let Fido drink from the pool. The best way to keep this from happening is to make sure he always has plenty of cool, clean water available.

Fur and Skin

Did you know that dogs can get sunburns? Pups with pale or thin fur are particularly susceptible. Ask your vet for advice on putting sunscreen on your pooch. Also, before bringing Fido back inside, rinse him off to get the chlorine and pool chemicals out of his fur.

Swimming Lessons

If your canine pal can’t swim, take time to teach him. Hold Fido gently in the water to support him, and encourage him with praise and attention. Never throw your dog into the pool: even if he gets the hang of swimming, the experience could scare him so much he becomes terrified of the water.
