Did you know that more than 85% of pets over the age of four already suffer from some type of oral health problem?

Poor dental health can lead to a host of other medical issues, including diseases of the heart, liver and kidneys. Fortunately, this is preventable. All it takes is a commitment to dental care, both professional and at home. The dental services at The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt have been designed to support a lifetime of healthy smiles. We offer everything from routine cleanings to advanced care.

Dental disease starts with buildup on the teeth of bacteria that are normally present in the mouth. The earliest sign of a potential problem is the presence of bad breath. Contrary to popular belief, healthy pets should not give off an unpleasant odor from their mouths. Left unaddressed, this bacteria can invade the gums, leading to gingivitis. Rapidly, plaque and tartar will accumulate on the surface of the teeth and bacteria will continue to flourish, causing loosening or loss of teeth. This can be painful for your pet.

To avoid all of this, we recommend bringing your pet in for a dental appointment at least once a year. Our veterinarians have extensive training in preventative dental care as well as addressing complex issues caused by dental disease. We will thoroughly examine your pet’s teeth and gums. Following a routine exam, if dental problems are suspected, we may recommend a more comprehensive oral exam which requires the use of anesthesia. While your pet is safely sedated, we can then take the appropriate steps to address the problem at hand. This may include extraction of diseased or damaged teeth, treatment of abscesses or oral surgery. Rest assured that your companion will be closely monitored and well cared for by our experienced team.

Finally, we’ll send you home with instructions on how to provide ongoing dental care to your pet in between vet visits. This includes regular brushing, and may also involve the use of various products designed to support good oral health, such as treats and toys.

Whether it’s routine, preventative dentistry or advanced intervention, we’re prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure a clean, comfortable mouth for your pet. Join with us today and let’s keep your loved one from becoming a statistic. Contact us to get started!
