Allergy & Dermatology Services in Summerfield
Like humans, pets can experience allergies and skin problems. Unlike humans, however, pets can’t tell us exactly what’s bothering them or what they’re having a reaction to. At The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt, our Summerfield veterinary team is fully equipped to help you figure out what’s ailing your pet. We are proud to be an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited animal hospital, which means we use the latest technologies and diagnostic techniques to help us figure out what’s ailing your pet. We are held to the highest standards of veterinary care in the country and pass this dedication to quality along to you and your pet.

What do allergies look like in pets?
Allergies look different for different pets. Your pet’s symptoms will look different depending on what they’re allergic to. However, the symptoms that your pet is experiencing will help narrow down the possible allergens that are affecting your pet, so it’s helpful for us if you keep track of your pet’s symptoms before you bring them in to see us.
- Itching - Itching is the most common symptom of allergies in pets; it can be localized to one spot in the body, or can be generalized all over their body
- Coughing or wheezing - Your pet can experience breathing difficulties or coughing as a result of exposure to allergens
- Sneezing - Just like your own hay fever symptoms, if your pet is sneezing frequently, it could be due to an allergy
- Vomiting - Allergies can also affect the digestive system, especially if your pet has some kind of food allergy
Dermatology at The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt
Skin issues are fairly common in pets. If you notice that your pet is scratching at themselves frequently, especially in one spot, it’s possible that they are experiencing skin irritation. Other symptoms include excessive licking, flaky skin, foul odor, or shaking. Skin irritation can be caused by allergies, parasites like fleas or ticks, as well as hormone or auto-immune disorders.
At The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt, our Summerfield veterinary team can help determine the cause of your pet’s skin issues. When you bring your pet in to see us, our veterinary team will conduct a full physical exam and ask you questions about your pet’s home environment to help us narrow down what might be causing your pet’s condition. We may run laboratory tests to identify the underlying cause. After we diagnose your pet, we’ll work closely with you to treat your pet’s skin issue. This can include anything from medicated baths to topical ointments.
If you suspect your pet is suffering from a skin condition, don’t let it linger. Our Summerfield veterinary team is ready to help you.
