Pet Grooming

Cat and dog grooming is an important part of caring for a pet. If you are a pet owner and unable to provide grooming services for your animal on your own, contact The Animal Hospital at Lake Brandt in Summerfield, NC, to meet with one of our veterinarians. We have some advice regarding cat and dog grooming to keep in mind when caring for your furry friend.

Keep On Top of Routine Care

If you miss some grooming sessions with your pet, grooming will become more difficult in the future. This is because the fur will become matted due to neglect. Make it a priority to comb or brush your dog or cat regularly to help avoid knots in the fur. Nails or claws also need regular maintenance. If the nails or claws are not clipped often, a pet could become injured if they get snagged in your carpeting. Keep a set of clippers on hand to trim claws or nails as needed.

Be Aware of Preventative Measures

In addition to bathing, combing, and clipping, a pet also needs other grooming treatments to keep it happy and healthy. One of these treatments is the application of parasite prevention medication. This can be obtained from one of our veterinarians and is given to a pet every month to keep fleas and ticks from becoming problems. If you are unable to administer this medication on your own, or if you would like it done for you during a grooming session, contact us to schedule an appointment at your convenience.

How To Bathe Your Pet

If you bathe your dog or cat on your own, take the time to prepare the area for the grooming session. Preparation can help keep your pet calm and make the experience much easier. Fill a sink basin or tub with several inches of warm water. Get a towel, comb, brush, and hairdryer, and have these tools available for the session. Submerge your pet in the warm water and add a bit of pet shampoo to your pet’s fur. Lather well and rinse. Immediately dry your pet with a towel or hair dryer set on low. Afterward, comb or brush your pet’s fur to remove any knots.
